Research Project Information Sheet

Ethics approval number: S/14/665

Purpose
The purpose of this research is to better understand the experience, sentiment and vision of Sippy Downs residents regarding the future direction and development of their community. Thus the current survey will investigate developmental and infrastructure aspects of the community as well as it will provide a more accurate sociocultural community profile.

Background
After the first 15 years of steady development of housing in Sippy Downs, there are extensive plans to expand current community facilities and housing stock, particularly in the new Sippy Downs Town Centre and Palmview. All residents of Sippy Downs are going to be affected by these developments. This survey provides a platform for their views to be expressed, with the potential to inform future planning in and around Sippy Downs. The Sippy Downs area possesses distinctive characteristics as a knowledge hub with aspirations to evolve into a more sustainable community in accordance with the local council’s long range plans.

Participant experience
You are invited to take part in this project if you are over 18 years old and a current resident of Sippy Downs for at least 1 year. If you choose to take part, you will be invited to complete a short online survey which will take approximately 2 - 4 minutes of your time. The survey will ask about visions for the future and experience of living in Sippy Downs.

Risks and benefits
The psychological risk is no more than minimal. Some participants may have an emotional response to some questions if they feel particularly strongly about the future direction of their community or feel anxious about being criticised for their opinions. However, you will not be individually identified, as your participation and responses will be anonymous, and if you feel uncomfortable, you may discontinue participation at any time without penalty or need to explain. While you will not receive any tangible rewards for participating, your ideas will help expand the knowledge base of futures studies.

Participation and consent
Participation in the survey is voluntary, and you may answer as few or as many questions as you desire. As your survey responses are anonymous, it will not be possible to withdraw your responses after you have submitted them. Consent will be implied by completion and submission of the survey. The consent is for the use of your responses in this project ( PhD thesis) as well as for use in any potential future academic work by this or other researchers and to inform potential future developments in the Sippy Downs/Sunshine Coast area.

Results
A summary of findings will be available on www.sippydowns.org.au after analysis of the data in September 2014 for 5 years. Non-identifiable results may be presented at external or internal conferences, meetings, or by publication. Survey outcomes will be stored at the USC Research Data Management Storage.
