A law has been passed in New York that allows local school districts to offer veterans an exemption on their property taxes of up to $180,000 of their assessed value, based on qualifying factors such as serving in the armed services during a time of war, serving in an actual combat zone, and suffering a disability from being wounded in combat. Enacting this exemption will cause an increase in school tax rates. Had the exemption been in effect for 2014-15 at the maximum level, Hilton School taxes would have been 2% higher for all property owners not receiving the veteran's exemption. There is an option for the District to adopt the exemption at partial levels, with proportionately lower impacts on school tax rates. The Hilton School Board is seeking input in determining whether to adopt the exemption for the 2015-16 school year and beyond. Please respond to the 4 questions below to assist the Board in making this important decision. Thank you.
