We call upon The Secretary of State to reverse this policy and reaffirm this to be the duty of the state.

• We confirm that the protection of children is core to the social work task.

• We believe the duty to take a child away from their parents and family is a task which should always be held up to public scrutiny and political accountability.

• The state and the courts must maintain the joint decision for the removal of children from their families.

• We believe vulnerable children should be looked after by organisations which are regulated, and to suggest not doing this is outrageous and a damning indictment of the Coalition government.

• We believe the current stranglehold on local government finance is not the result of austerity measures but of a political mantra in England to reduce the role of the state. This is not the same in the rest of the UK, nor internationally, where the dismantling of our good local government services is examined with disbelief. We believe good local government services are key building blocks of our civic society.

• As a profession we believe there is a strong and legitimate role for all sorts of providers of social work and children's services, but that the decisions about the future lives of vulnerable children must rest with the government and judiciary.
