YEP Consent Cards Resource Consultation
Feedback due 9.30am Tuesday 8 June 2021.
The Youth Educating Peers (YEP) Project is a sexual health program which provides education to young people (via youth peer educators) and the youth sector in Western Australia, operating under the Youth Affairs Council of Western Australia (YACWA). We are currently developing a resource, internally titled the ‘consent cards’.
Background to the development of the ‘consent cards’:
The topic of consent is increasing in its need to be discussed in community, and particular attention needs to be given to educate and empower young people.
YEP Peer Educators have been providing outreach sessions to young people for some time on the topic of consent. Previous frameworks that have been used to explain consent have included models such as ‘FRIES’ (Freely Given, Informed, Enthusiastic, Specific), ‘My body, my choice. Their body, their choice.’ and ‘Ready, willing and able.’
Whilst using these models in community peer educators have found, in some cases, that the explanations didn’t go far enough or were too broad. Feedback from peer educators and young people in community has been that more specific statements and information around consent needed to be made and that these needed to be clear and relatable to young people’s personal experiences. Some young people also spoke about their confusion around the use of metaphors and wanted clear statements.
An overview of the consent cards:
The consent cards resource is a series of ‘cards’ which each outline a specific element or situation about consent – These are written in the bottom of each card. This text is open for feedback. We are also open to hearing of additional topics that you feel should be covered by the resource. Each statement is accompanied by an image, to aid visual learners and those with varied abilities and English proficiency. The images contained in the draft copy attached provide example templates, you will see texts over some of the images of feedback already gained from community about some additions/edits that should be made. Further feedback is welcome on edits to the images. Young people have requested resources that were representative of themselves and their friends, as such the final images will be made by young people in plasticine (based on feedback) and imposed into the resource. All images contained in the resource will be made from plasticine, but will be based on the draft below.
Peer Educators and YEP’s Youth Reference Group have chosen to take a rights based approach to discussing consent in this resource – everyone has the right to consent, my body my choice, etc.. However we are open to feedback about this and can change tones or wording based on community feedback.
How will the cards be used?
The cards intended audience is young people aged 12-25. How they are used is open to community. The YEP Project intends to make them widely available for the youth sector via our website, accompanied by some talking points for educators. The cards can be used to spark group or one to one conversations with young people about consent. We also hope to collate the cards into a poster.
Feedback is sought from community and youth services and young people via survey monkey.
Feedback closes 9.30am Tuesday 8 June 2021.
