Boise Parks & Recreation has started a pilot program to determine if reduced maintenance levels in some city parks and public rights-of-way could be a low-impact way of saving taxpayer dollars.
This season’s reductions include decreased irrigation, mowing, trimming, bed care, shrub pruning, turf fertilization, tree well maintenance and herbicide applications which will result in more weeds, taller turf, more grass clippings, brown turf and harder play surfaces.
If fully implemented, the program could save as much as $340,000 annually in temporary wages, water, fertilizer, pesticides and other materials.
Service reductions will not affect restroom cleaning or public safety in the parks.
