ScienceLIVE Components for the 2024-25 school year:
  • We will be visiting classrooms in-person this year!
  • At least two practicing UMass Chan scientists will be present for each of your class periods.
  • We will bring the materials for a fun, hands-on experiment for each of your students.
  • All of this is FREE!
We know that most of you teach multiple sections of the same grade- and that you would like this experience for all of your students. We can do that! Our hope is that we can schedule all classes for one teacher in the same day, and come back to work with another teacher's students a different day.

For your upper elementary classes, we are offering Project BioEYES (exploring genetics and the life cycle).
In this module, your students will explore and observe the life cycle of a vertebrate animal. This program is being piloted in the 2024-25 school year and involves a one week interactive experience using zebrafish to learn about development, habitat, and genetics.

For your 7th grade classes, we are offering The Building Blocks of Life (exploring cell and molecular biology).
In this module, your students will revisit the concepts: the characteristics of all living things, cells as the basic units of life, and the role of DNA, with our scientists. They will be engaged in the steps of the scientific process as they are guided in a hands-on DNA extraction. Students will then compare the extracted DNA from different foods.

For your 8th grade classes, we are offering Doctor's Orders: Finish Your Antibiotics (exploring microbiology).
In this module, your students will be introduced to the world of microorganisms with our scientists! They will do a hands-on modeling experiment to see how mutations affect traits of a pathogenic “strain of bacteria” and the importance of following the directions for an antibiotic prescription
