Public Art Murals |
The Public Arts Commission is developing its recommendations to the City Council regarding what to do with existing murals in and around Downtown Indio. The Commission wants to hear from Indio citizens as it develops these recommendations and seeks your input on the survey questions below.
Many of the murals have been in place 20 years or longer and the majority of them are on private property. For the private property murals, the City must get the owner’s permission before it can spend any monies to repair these murals.
Several of the murals have deteriorated to the extent that they either need to be repaired or removed. The City has contracted with a mural conservator who has estimated that the cost of repairing several of the most deteriorated murals could range from $58,000 to $161,000. The City collects a fee from new development in the City for public arts that is deposited into an Art in Public Places Fund. The City does not use General Fund monies (i.e. monies used for parks, police and other City services) for public arts.
Please take a few minutes and answer the survey questions below. Your input is greatly appreciated!
