Siskiyou Outdoor Recreation Alliance (SORA) is submitting a Regional Park Program grant application from California Parks and Recreation to fund a new Mt. Shasta Nordic Center guest services lodge and 4.8 miles of unfunded sections of the Gateway Phase Two Trail System. Completion of the project is an invaluable opportunity to enhance and connect two widely used outdoor recreation facilities that will benefit the health and quality of life for Siskiyou County locals and visitors for years to come.
The project is a partnership between Shasta-Trinity National Forest (STNF), Siskiyou Outdoor Recreation Alliance (SORA), and Mt. Shasta Trail Association (MSTA).
Mt. Shasta Nordic Guest Services Lodge
The new handicap accessible guest lodge facilities will include a new 10 x 60 heated lodge comprised of two 10 x 30 portable trailers joined together. These trailers will house our rental gear, guest lounge, an entry station and small retail area, and a private office for the staff. Construction will be both durable and architecturally significant with a modern aesthetic. The lodge will be inviting, dry and warm for both employees and patrons and will be built to last. The trailer will have batteries charged by a small solar array deployed on a portable exterior scaffold to power the lights, outlets and circulators for the gas fired radiant heating system. The staff will have access to a RV style water system designed for hand washing and light duty cleaning. Fresh water and effluent grey water will be stored within the trailer in built in tanks that are pumped and filled accordingly. Because the Nordic Center is a seasonal operation, the trailers are portable so they can be moved to a secure storage space in Mt. Shasta at the end of each ski season.
The lodge will be supplemented by a new facilities trailer that will house trail signs, equipment, a small workshop for onsite repairs, and new trailhead kiosk. A double vault toilet adjacent to the NC trailhead and parking lot will also be added. Our current trailers will be used to store the snowmobile, firewood, and heavy equipment. The yurt will continue as part of our operation.
Gateway Phase II Trails
Trails included in the proposal represent the remaining 4.8 miles of unfunded trails within the proposed 47-mile Gateway Trail System conceptual plan and a new trailhead with an information kiosk located on City of Mt. Shasta Property. Funding the remaining 4.8-mile segment will complete the trail system, making it the largest continuous mountain biking trail network in Northern California. The system will link the Mt. Shasta Nordic Center to the City of Mt. Shasta, Mt. Shasta Ski Park, local businesses, schools, campgrounds, and local parks, including Mt. Shasta Recreation and Park District.
