Lhtako Dene Nation (“Lhtako”) is considering reforming its current election processes to create more clarity, accountability, and transparency in the elections of Chief and Councillors.
Lhtako’s elections are currently governed by the Indian Act. By establishing its own Election Code, Lhtako can take control of its election process, designing a system for electing its Chief and Councillors that better suits the community.
Creating and adopting a new Election Code will be a slow and careful process. If Lhtako members choose to approve a new Election Code, the changes would likely come into effect in 2020.
The purpose of this Questionnaire is to gather the opinions of Lhtako Members, so that an Election Code may be created that reflects the values and desires of the community. With your input, we hope to create an Election Code that will have broad community support.
