International Challenges in Surgical Training Delphi Stage 3

Thank you for participating in this Delphi Consensus to find solutions to the International Challenges to Surgical Training.
The first stage of this process took place at the ICOSET 2014 meeting in Harrogate. An expert panel consisted of:
• Professor Jonathan Beard, Director of Education, Royal College of Surgeons of England
• Mr Craig McIllhenny, Surgical Director, Faculty of Surgical Trainers
• Professor Vassilios Papalois, President Section of Surgery & Professor Wolfgang Feil, President, European Union of Medical Specialists
• Professor Carlos Pellegrini, President & Dr Ajit Sachdeva, Director of Education of the American College of Surgeons
• Professor Ken Harris, Director of Education, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
• Associate Professor Stephen Tobin, Dean of Education, Royal Australasian College of Surgeons
• Association of Surgeons in Training, UK trainee (Resident) surgeons voice
This panel identified the 3 greatest challenges to surgical training in their country along with 3-5 lesser challenges. Their responses were grouped into 10 overarching challenges:
1. Training and Service Conflict
2. Need to develop ever-changing curricula / assessment methods
3. Lack of appropriate recognition and approval of trainers
4. Working time restrictions
5. Workforce planning
6. Lack of autonomy of trainee surgeons
7. Lack of training resources
8. Underfunding for training activities
9. Lack of mentoring
10. The need for international collaboration
In the second stage, each panel member offered potential solutions to these challenges, based on the needs of their own country. This questionnaire is based on those responses.
We would be grateful for your contribution to the next stage by indicating your level of agreement, on a 5 point Likert scale, with the statements offered as possible solutions to each of the International Challenges facing surgical training.
