Welcome to Little Skein's Big Survey about Hand-Dyed Yarn

Hello! I’m Anne Vally, a San Francisco knitter, artist and hand-dyer of Little Skein yarn. This survey is a joint project between me and a few of my dyeing and designer friends.

We want to know your experiences with hand-dyed yarn.

Why a survey?

The yarn world has changed so much over the last few years. High-profile businesses have closed. Lots of new people have learned how to knit and crochet. Ravelry is no longer the one-stop spot for yarn and patterns the way it used to be.

We want to learn more about how you found hand-dyed yarn, what you love about it, and what frustrates you when working with it. Your feedback will help us:
  • Learn how we can reach more people
  • Better attune our yarn offerings to what you want and love
  • Improve our businesses so we can earn a living wage

Who's involved?

I'm leading the survey (Little Skein), and I'm joined by:

Brittany Garber, crochet designer and teacher, who helped make the survey crochet-friendly. You know her as KnotBadBritt.

Dyers: Camellia Fiber Co, Little Wing Fibers, Megs and Co, Heathered Handmades, The Knitten Word, and Little Fox Yarn.

Designers: Jessica Ays (Double the Stitches) and Crystal Hiatt (Shop Factory Girl)

You should know that:

Your responses are anonymous and confidential.
You aren't asked your name or email anywhere. Most questions are multiple choice or ranking. All open-ended questions are optional. If you choose to share a comment, I will keep the specific comment confidential. Individual comments will not be shared publicly in any way.

I will be sharing the survey results with my colleagues, summarizing them in my newsletter and on social media. I will keep any information I share intentionally broad to protect anonymity.

Everyone who knits or crochets is invited to take this survey.

The survey will take about 10 minutes, and it will be open for entries through January 8, 2024.

As a thank you for your time, I’m offering a prize drawing for some of my hand-dyed yarn. On January 9, I'll choose 5 people who will each receive a single skein (surprise colorway) of my Targhee Worsted yarn.

12% of survey complete.
