Individual communications experts interested in joining the Ocean Decade Strategic Communications Group for the next two-year term from early 2025 are requested to complete the following application form. The full Terms of Reference can be found here.
The Executive Secretary of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), with the technical support of the Decade Coordination Unit, will select the members of the Group.
The UNESCO-IOC Executive Secretary will ensure that the proposed members possess the necessary skills, knowledge, influence and impartiality required to align with the vision and objectives of the Ocean Decade. These members must be capable of undertaking the responsibilities outlined in the Terms of Reference and meet the following selection criteria:

These members must be capable of undertaking the responsibilities outlined in the Terms of Reference and meet the following selection criteria:
- Demonstrated technical skills, thematic knowledge, international experiences and ability to contribute to the Ocean Decade communications efforts, in accordance with the principles of non-discrimination, equal treatment and absence of conflict of interests. Women and underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged to apply
- Specific knowledge and skills in science communications and outreach in topics related to sustainable development and the Ocean Decade Challenges
- Specific knowledge and skills in science communications and outreach to marginalized or under-represented groups including stakeholders in Least Developed Countries and Small Island Developing States, women, youth, local communities, Indigenous and local knowledge holders and persons with disabilities
- Strong networks and professional connections that can be used to amplify communications impacts and efforts of the Ocean Decade
The Group will comprise up to 30 voluntary professionals of high standing in one or more key areas of expertise relevant to the Ocean Decade and with due respect to geographic, gender and generational balance.
