Urinary tract infections(UTIs) remain the #1 leading cause of re-hospitalization among patients with spinal cord injury, and the average person with a spinal cord injury experiences 2.5 UTIs a year. Current Medicare coding restricts access to intermittent catheters that help prevent UTIs, known as Closed System, Sterile Catheters with Insertion Supplies, or 53 catheters. This requires those with spinal cord injuries and Spina Bifida to get two or more UTIs in a 12-month period in order to qualify for the catheters that can help prevent UTIs.
We are looking to change this and are petitioning to modify the restrictions to automatically qualify people with spinal cord injuries and Spina Bifida for Closed System (53) intermittent catheters. Hollister is leading this effort, but the change we are petitioning is supported by industry organizations (e.g., AAHomecare), clinical organizations, patient groups, industry coalitions, catheter manufacturers, and service organizations - all advocating for this change.
