Cincinnati SLA Chapter: The Athenaeum of Ohio |
It’s time to explore one of the special libraries in Cincinnati, the Eugene H. Maly Memorial Library at the Athenaeum of Ohio. Rich with history, education, and beauty, the Athenaeum will open its doors to our chapter for a tour. Our own Connie Song is the Director of the Eugene H. Maly Library and welcomes us to discover the library’s deep theological collection as well as to visit the magnificent chapels housed in the seminary.
"Athenaeum" was a name in ancient Rome for a place of learning. It is derived from Athena, the goddess of wisdom. It was the name given to the school of higher learning created by Cincinnati's first prelate, Bishop Edward D. Fenwick who founded it in 1829. It included St. Francis Xavier Seminary which later was renamed Mount St. Mary's of the West. The present-day Athenaeum continues the tradition. Athenaeum can be pronounced one of two ways: Athen-EEE-um (Greek), or Athen-AY-um (Latin). (http://www.athenaeum.edu/Discover/Discoverfaq.aspx)

After the tour, join your colleagues at Unos in Anderson Town Center for socializing and networking. All are welcome. Guests pay for own dinner.
