ENCOURAGE THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA’S CONTINUED SUPPORT OF AAMP

For nearly five decades, the African American Museum in Philadelphia (AAMP) has provided ongoing testimony to African Americans’ immeasurable contributions to our collective heritage.  Now, as we navigate this time of unprecedented challenges, we must not forget the vital contributions African American art and culture make to the spirit and vitality of our city.
 
Confronted with the extraordinary human and financial toll brought by the COVID 19 pandemic, the City has proposed a revised budget that includes the elimination of funding for AAMP.   While difficult decisions are necessary during this time of shared sacrifice, the de-funding of the museum will disproportionately impact Philadelphia’s foremost African American cultural institution and the community it serves.

TELL CITY COUNCIL TO RESTORE AAMP’S ANNUAL ALLOCATION

As a resident of your district, I am writing to urge you to restore the City’s funding of the African American Museum in Philadelphia (AAMP).  AAMP provides an important service to our city by bringing diverse communities together in appreciation of the Black experience.  Its exciting exhibitions and thought-provoking public programs highlight the art and culture of African Americans.  Each year 20,000 students learn important lessons on African American history by visiting the museum. These outstanding programs and activities make AAMP a favorite destination for city residents and tourists alike.

AAMP offers an authentic perspective on African American art, history, and culture.  I hope you will demonstrate your commitment to the diversity of Philadelphia’s cultural sector by supporting the restoration of AAMP’s annual allocation.
