Administered by the Virginia Association for Teachers of Family and Consumer Sciences, Inc.

The Sharron K. Glasscock Family and Consumer Sciences Scholarship is intended for teachers currently teaching Family and Consumer Sciences in a Virginia Public School interested in pursuing further education and training for the purpose of meeting the ever-changing needs of the students.

Requirement for Scholarship:

The Sharron K. Glasscock Family and Consumer Sciences Scholarship in the amount of $1000 will be awarded to a person or persons meeting the following criteria:

1. A Virginia Family and Consumer Sciences teacher pursuing a post-graduate degree.

2. One or more Family and Consumer Sciences teachers pursuing professional development in new educational practices, technology, or current trends in FACS education.

3. If no applicant qualifies under categories 1or 2 above, the annual award funds may be made available for educational presentations at the annual Virginia Family and Consumer Sciences Professional Development Institute.

4. Teachers receiving this scholarship must be willing to present knowledge gained through the professional development or post-graduate studies at the annual Virginia Family and Consumer Sciences Professional Development Institute.

Scholarship Policies:

The scholarship applicant must currently be teaching Family and Consumer Sciences in a public school in Virginia. The applicant’s proposed professional development must lead to a post-graduate degree, relate to educational best practices (latest trends in education), or to specific Family and Consumer Sciences content competencies.

The deadline for submitting completed scholarship application is set by the VATFACS Executive Board.

The recipient of the scholarship will be notified by May 15 of the year the application is made.

All parts of the application must be completed and attachments present in order to qualify.

A check in the amount of the scholarship will be mailed by July 31 to the recipient(s) of the scholarship.

Within 30 days of completing the professional development or semester of post-graduate study, the scholarship recipient must send a copy of the certificate of participation in the professional development activity or send a copy of the college grades to the Past President of VATFACS by way of Virginia’s Family and Consumer Sciences Specialist, Virginia Department of Education, P.O. Box 2120, Richmond, Virginia 23218-2120.

If the scholarship recipient does not complete the planned course of study or drops out during the year, the recipient shall be directed to refund the unused amount of the scholarship to the treasurer of VATFACS by December 31 the year the scholarship is awarded.

The recipient is also expected, if requested, to share knowledge learned through a presentation at the annual Virginia Family and Consumer Sciences Professional Development Institute the year following receipt of the scholarship.
