What is a City Administrator?
Legislation has been introduced to add the position of City Administrator to oversee operations for the City of La Crosse. In October, a motion was passed by the Common Council to delay the decision until after the April 2025 Spring election. We are encouraging citizens to get involved with this process and become informed about the city administrator position and how it may affect the role and duties of the Mayor.

The Mayor of the City of La Crosse currently oversees all daily operations of the city and is charged with managing daily operations in an organization with a current $70 million annual operating budget and $500,000,000 in assets. According to the city charter in place, the only requirement needed to run for the office of Mayor is that the individual must be at least 18 years old.

In your opinion, what levels of education and experience should be required for the individual running for the Office of Mayor?

You must be 18 years old.

You must be 18 years old with a high school degree or GED.

You must have a college degree.

Candidate is required to have an advanced college degree in public administration, business, finance or related fields and/or equivalent work experience (5+ years).

No. City Council should make decisions insulated from influence of outside groups.

Yes. There is nothing wrong with special interest groups having an impact on local policy makers.

In some circumstances, yes. There should be some limits on how groups can influence decisions.

It does not matter as long as council supports/agrees with my views on the issue.

They should always do what they agreed to do.

As often as possible, but I believe circumstances sometimes do not always allow that to happen.

I trust the Council to do whatever the situation requires.

* 7. Should the City Council be able to make decisions that they feel would benefit the community without public input and retribution?

No. Council members need to consider how the public reacts.

Yes. Council members make challenging choices for the community that are not always popular but can have long-term benefits.

I really don't believe the City Council makes decisions that are impactful, so it does not matter.

* 8. Organizational culture is key to retaining good employees. Should the City of La Crosse strive to retain effective employees by instilling a strong workplace culture?

Yes. Good employee retention leads to more efficient and effective performance in all city services.

This should not be a top emphasis of city government.

This really shouldn't be a priority. City employees should be happy they have jobs.
