Lahaina Oral History Project - Participant Identification Survey

Lahaina Oral History Project - We're Seeking Participants

Aloha,

Honua Consulting (led by Matt Sproat and Kehau Watson-Sproat) and Kumu Pono Associates (led by Kepa and Onaona Maly) are seeking participants for an oral history project on Lahaina. This project, funded by the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency, will support the cultural resource recovery work in Lahaina.

The project team is seeking long-time residents of Lahaina and/or individuals whose families have long ties to Lahaina. Multi-generational ties to Lahaina are recommended. You may self-identify your interest in participating or recommend others for participation through the use of this survey.

By engaging directly with these individuals and families, the Lahaina oral history project will not only document their memories of Lahaina but also preserve the unique voices and viewpoints of Lahaina's many diverse communities. This ensures a more inclusive approach to historical scholarship and heritage preservation as Lahaina moves forward.

An oral history project is a method of collecting and preserving historical information through recorded interviews with individuals who have firsthand knowledge of past events, experiences, and traditions. This type of project focuses on capturing personal narratives and memories that might not be documented in written sources, thereby providing a richer, more nuanced understanding of history from the perspectives of those who lived it. Oral histories are invaluable for gaining insights into social, cultural, and political aspects of history, often highlighting personal experiences that are overlooked in traditional historical records.

All individuals identified through this survey will receive follow up communication as to next steps. All identified persons will be offered an opportunity to share their input, whether through in-person interviews, telephone or virtual interviews, or an online survey. If you have any questions about this study, please contact Dr. Trisha Kehaulani Watson-Sproat at community@honuaconsulting.com.

If you have multiple individuals you would like to recommend for participation, please feel free to email us at community@honuaconsulting.com with a list of names and current contact information for the potential participants.
