If a 31-day pass is approved, it would replace the current calendar monthly pass. However, VRE could make the 31-day pass available initially only on VRE Mobile, with the regular calendar monthly pass still available as a paper ticket. Many commuter rail agencies across the country have either moved from monthly to 31-day passes or are looking at such a change.

While offering a similar overall experience for the rider, a 31-day pass would differ from a calendar monthly pass in certain ways:

  Calendar Monthly Pass 31-Day Pass
Purchase
Cannot be purchased after the 9th of the month

 Can be purchased any time
Validation Required
No

 Yes, on first use
Valid Until
End of calendar month

Midnight on 31st day after validation
Free Ride Certificates (FRCs)
FRCs not useful for monthly pass holders

FRCs could be used in between 31-day passes
When You Go on Vacation
 Monthly pass goes unused

Wait to validate 31-day pass until you return
Expiration
End of calendar month

One year from date of purchase unless validated

We would like your feedback on this proposal. In answering these questions, please assume that the price of a 31-day pass is the same as an equivalent calendar monthly pass. SmartBenefits could be used to purchase a 31-day pass, just like the calendar monthly pass.
