High Demand Hidden Careers (HDHC) is a state-funded grant program being offered to eligible participants to train and certify as a Research Administrator. BayTech has partnered with five institutions (Houston Methodist Academic Institute, University of Texas Medical Branch [UTMB], UTHealth-Houston, Rice University, and University of Houston) to offer this training and internship opportunity to 30 eligible candidates during the 2024-2025 grant year. Candidates will rank below the institutions in their order of preference to assist in the matching process of assigning a candidate with an institution.

  1. Houston Methodist Academic Institute (Houston Methodist Research Institute - 6670 Bertner Ave Houston, TX 77030)

  2. University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) (Galveston Campus)

    Research Ethics and Integrity Internship (Fall)
    This internship is designed to provide real-word experience regarding research ethics and research integrity. To do so, we will visit different research spaces including clinical spaces, animal research spaces as well as a biosafety 3-4 laboratory. We will observe how research regulations are operationalized in practical settings including the Institutional Review Board, the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, the Biosafety committee and more.
    Requirement: The intern will be given a schedule at the beginning of the internship and is expected to be on campus if in person activities take place. This will vary significantly based on the week. Some remote course work will also be required.

    Compliance Internship (Timing Flexible)
    The Office of Institutional Compliance serves the UTMB community by offering guidance on a wide range of research compliance issues, including human subjects research and the use of animals in research, conflicts of interest, export control issues, and research misconduct and to ensure that UTMB is compliant with federal, state, and local laws and regulations as well as UTMB and UT System policies. Additionally, the OIC works to integrate research compliance education and training across UTMB and to develop new educational programs. The intern will assist by performing research into relevant law and regulations affecting human subject and animal subject research, and use it to provide guidance to UTMB’s workforce.

    Clinical Research Coordinator Internship (Late Spring)
    This internship allows interns to shadow experienced clinical research coordinators and nurses to gain insight into the real world of clinical research recruitment, study visits and research regulatory processes for a variety of protocol types. You will also attend an IRB Committee meeting to observe the IRB process, in-person Comprehensive Clinical Research Training and accompany a clinical research coach to coaching sessions.
    In-person activities take place at the UTMB Galveston campus. Schedules will be provided at the beginning of the internship and vary week-to-week based on activities. Remote training will be required.

    The in-person internship will introduce participants to the Research Administrator career and types of roles available in Research Administration. At the completion of the internship, participants will report on their internship experiences and also receive career consultation to further explore potential job opportunities in Research Administration.
  5. University of Houston (Division of Research University of Houston, 4302 University Drive Houston, TX 77204)

    Founded in 1927, the University of Houston is the largest public research university in Houston and the third-largest university in Texas, offering undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs. Located in Houston’s historic Third Ward, UH has a footprint that encompasses its flagship campus in Houston and significant instructional sites in Katy and Sugar Land. The University was designated an R1 institution by the Carnegie Foundation in 2011 and reported $230 million in research expenditures for fiscal year 2023. UH is designated a Hispanic-serving Institution (HSI) and Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-serving (AANAPISI) institution. The in-person internship will introduce interns to the daily operations within a research office, which ranges from Pre-Award to Post-Award and financial research accounting. Interns will be exposed to the full award life cycle including proposal development and submission, award review and negotiation, establishing cost centers within PeopleSoft, issuance of Subawards, as well as the financial management of invoicing, reporting, and closeout. These skills are in high demand and extremely marketable to potential employers.
  6. TIRR Memorial Hermann (1333 Moursund Street Houston, TX 77030)

    TIRR Memorial Hermann’s research enterprise is a nationally recognized leader in rehabilitation science, anchored by four dynamic divisions: the Brain Injury Research Center (BIRC), Spinal Cord Injury and Disability Research (SCIDR), Independent Living Research Utilization (ILRU), and the Center for Health Outcomes and Informatics Research in Rehabilitation (CHOIRR). These divisions drive innovation across the continuum of care, from acute rehabilitation to community reintegration and health equity. TIRR Research is strengthened by strategic academic partnerships with McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston and Baylor College of Medicine, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and advancing evidence-based practices to improve the lives of individuals with disabilities. This hybrid internship will give Research Administration interns exposure to the full life cycle of an award as well as financial management and human subjects protections within this dynamic research group.
