Introduction: CAHIIM

The Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM) is an accrediting organization that has independent authority in all actions pertaining to the accreditation of educational programs. Achieving CAHIIM accreditation signifies that a program has fulfilled the requirements of the Accreditation Standards and that it equips students with the necessary skills for successful careers in the field. This year, CAHIIM’s Health Science Accreditation Council has developed and released the initial draft of the Health Science Accreditation Standards and Curriculum Competencies for the associate degree level. These Standards and Competencies are being made available for public comment.

CAHIIM – Public Interest

CAHIIM serves the public interest by operating in a consistent manner with all applicable ethical, business, and accreditation best practices. Accreditation is a voluntary, self-regulatory process by which nongovernmental associations recognize educational programs found to meet or exceed standards for educational quality. Accreditation also assists in the further improvement of these educational programs as related to resources invested, processes followed, and outcomes achieved.

CAHIIM develops and adopts Accreditation Standards and Curriculum Competencies that are the basis for programmatic review and evaluation of certain degree-granting and non-degree-granting programs. These provide the expectations and requirements needed to establish a well-developed quality program.

Associate of Health Science Accreditation Standards & Curriculum Competencies

CAHIIM welcomes public comments, edits, changes, and feedback for the CAHIIM Associate of Health Science Accreditation Standards and Curriculum Competencies. The process consists of two open periods for public comment, the first period ended on August 15, 2024. CAHIIM had considered every comment received and deliberated on each as it relates to the individual Standard or competency, the collective of Standards and competencies, operationalizing the Standards and competencies on a site visit, and CAHIIM’s accreditation requirements. The modified Standards and curriculum competencies are now being released for the second public comment period which will end on October 24, 2024. Final modifications will be made based on comments received and the final version is expected to be shared with the CAHIIM Board of Directors for their approval in December 2024.
