Medication Management in Australian Primary Schools Survey

Some primary leaders have reported an increase in the number of students requiring medication to be given out at school. Others are reporting an increase in the number of students with complex medication or health needs (such as diabetes).
This presents resourcing and risk management challenges for schools, particularly in ensuring the necessary allocation of staff time to meet the medication and health needs of students in a site.
APPA wants to understand these challenges and so seeks your support in completing the survey at the link below.

5.How many children in a week might have temporary medication needs?
6.How many children in your school have complex medical requirements (such as PEG feeding, Type 1 / 2 diabetes, Anaphylaxis?
7.Approximately how much time each week is spent in managing children’s medicine? Ie storing, recording, administering, following up on missing medication etc.
8.How much time is spent in a week monitoring medication impact – i.e. monitoring eating, behaviour and reporting on this to family / medical professionals?
9.Do you have a trained / accredited health professional (ie a nurse) to administer mediation?
10.If you have a nurse on site, how is the role funded?
11.Have you had instances where medication was incorrectly given –such as incorrect amount, or to the wrong child? If so, how many instances?
12.Approximately how much time is spent on managing medication before and during school camps?
