World Oceans Day 2018 Campaign Survey

Dear Educator,

In honor of World Oceans Day - June 8, 2018 - a coalition of organizations has joined together to offer NYC teachers, as well as teachers across the U.S., resources to help students learn about, and TAKE ACTION, on our plastic pollution problem. As part of that, and thanks to Plastic Oceans Foundation, we're providing a FREE ACCESS CODE TO A POWERFUL FILM, A Plastic Ocean, that explores the health of our oceans and what we can all do to save this precious resource. Please complete the survey below to let us know if you and your students can help the oceans right now using one of the suggested choices, or one of your own! If you click "Yes," you'll get a FREE CODE FOR THE FILM and an accompanying Educational Supplement. This is a wonderful opportunity to inspire your students to take part in saving the world's oceans. In the award-winning adventure documentary film, A Plastic Ocean, journalist Craig Leeson goes searching for the elusive blue whale, but instead discovers plastic waste in what should be pristine ocean. Leeson, free diver Tanya Streeter, and an international team of scientists and researchers, travel to 20 locations around the world to explore the fragile state of our oceans, uncover alarming truths about plastic pollution, and reveal working solutions that can be put into immediate effect.

Refuse single use plastic, including Styrofoam, whenever and wherever possible (plastic straws, plastic utensils, plastic water bottles, products with excessive plastic packaging) and explore reusable and/or biodegradable alternatives

Use and encourage the use of reusable containers for drinks (water, coffee, tea etc) and for transporting food to reduce waste

Implement a ban on single use plastic in our classroom/school/home (or try it for a week or a month and see how it goes)

Raise funds to install one or more water filling stations at our school

Work with our Principal and School Food manager to eliminate sources of single use plastic in our school and school cafeteria (i.e. plastic fruit cups, excessively packaged food items, vending machines that sell drinks in plastic bottles)

Conduct a classroom or school waste audit to assess the impact of our consumer choices (see https://bit.ly/2FvLTey or https://www.grownyc.org/files/rcp/waste_audit_guide.pdf)

Implement a plastics recycling program at our school

Organize or join a local beach cleanup before June 8 or over the summer

Talk to friends and family and encourage them to Do One Thing for our oceans in 2018
