This year International Maritime Organisation [IMO] highlights the importance of gender equality with their theme “Empowering Women in the Maritime Community” which is alligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable development goals no.5 - gender equality. Currently no data is available on women in maritime in India and inorder to promote equality, the quintessential requirement is to have access to this data. Today we are missing out on 50% of the potential talent and by creating a facilitative environment for women , maritime will get the competitive edge needed.

Ms.Sanjam Sahi Gupta of Sitara Shipping Ltd, winner of Sandvik India Gender Awards 2018 (SIGA) has taken up the initiative to conduct this survey. Directorate General of Shipping, Ministry of shipping, Government of India have endorsed to this initiative.Maritime Gateway, South Asia's premier maritime business magazine got engaged for execution of this initiative.
