Answer the Call: Volunteer for the Warrior Hike Challenge!

Join the County of San Diego Department of Parks and Recreation and the San Diego County Parks Society in supporting our military community through the Warrior Hike Challenge! Taking place the Saturday before Memorial Day and Veterans Day, this bi-annual event is an unforgettable experience that puts strength and endurance to the test as participants tackle the rugged slopes of El Cajon Mountain.

We need volunteers like you to make this event an incredible experience for everyone! Be a part of the Warrior Hike Challenge team and cheer on our active-duty service members, veterans, and their families as they conquer the course.

Volunteer Opportunities:
  • Assist with traffic control and participant check-ins
  • Help keep hikers hydrated, safe, and motivated at hydration and celebration stations along the trail (don’t worry – we’ll handle your transportation!)
  • Wrap up the day by packing up and leaving the trail as beautiful as we found it

Who Can Volunteer: Everyone is welcome! Volunteer opportunities are open to individuals, families, groups, and community and corporate organizations of all ages and group sizes. Whether you're volunteering solo or bringing friends or family, there's a role for you to make a difference.

Helpful Information:

Check-In/Out: Head to the trailhead at El Capitan County Preserve, located at 13775 Blue Sky Ranch Road, Lakeside, CA, 92040. This is where all volunteers will check in and receive instructions.

Parking: Early arrivals can park directly at the El Capitan County Preserve trailhead. If the lot is full, additional parking is available across the street at Oakoasis County Preserve, located at 12620 Wildcat Canyon Road, Lakeside, CA, 92040. A tunnel under Wildcat Canyon Road conveniently connects the Oakoasis lot to the El Capitan trailhead.

Restrooms: Restroom facilities are available in two locations. The closest is at Oakoasis County Preserve, just across from the trailhead. Additional restrooms can be found about half a mile up the trail at El Capitan County Preserve.

What to Bring and Wear: Please come prepared for an outdoor adventure! Wear closed-toed shoes suitable for hiking and dress in layers to stay comfortable in changing temperatures. Bring a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated, and don’t forget sun protection such as sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses.

Community Service Credit: If you need community service credit for school, work, or court, we can provide documentation on the day of the event. Just let us know at check-in, and we’ll ensure you receive the necessary verification for your hours.

Attendance Reminder: Your presence is crucial to the success of this event! Each volunteer shift plays an essential role in supporting our participants along the trail. Please be sure to arrive on time and stay for your full shift to help us provide the best experience possible for all hikers. Thank you for being dependable and dedicated to this meaningful event!
