The City of Coralville and the Iowa City Community School District is embarking on an exciting master plan process to reimagine a new/renovated Recreation Center and a new Indoor Pool Competition Center in Coralville. The intention is to create a plan to add an addition to the existing spaces with new, vibrant, modern facilities that will serve the community for many years to come. Existing facilities will be renovated providing an updated, freshened, and blended look and function with the new spaces. Both city and school district staff are serving on the leadership and planning teams. The goal is to have a master plan to present to the School Board, Coralville City Council, and community in the late spring.
The existing Recreation Center just celebrated its 50th year of service to the Coralville community. The Indoor Pool has been a shared space for 36 years serving as both a practice and competition pool for district athletics and a recreational body of water for lap swimming, open swim, swim lessons, and aqua fitness. Over 150,000 people a year visit the Coralville Recreation Center and Indoor Pool. The facilities are in good shape but are beginning to feel their age, look dated, and no longer function under today’s standards. Won’t it be fun to imagine something new?
The new competition center would combine practice and swim meet space for West High School, Liberty High School, Northwest Middle School, and North Central Middle School. We’re working with Water’s Edge from Kansas City and Neumann Monson Architects in Iowa City to take the community and staff’s ideas and develop the concept.
You can help shape the plan by completing this survey. We want to hear from as many people as possible about their dreams and wishes for these new spaces. Please complete the survey by February 25, 2024.
