Coaching Qualifications

The World Ultimate Championships is the most prestigious international ultimate event in the world. The United States continues to be a leader in both competitive excellence and in Spirit of the Game on the international stage. The strength of the U.S. teams and the quality of the National Team experience are a result of the commitment of players, coaches, staff and supporters from across the country and a diverse set of backgrounds and experiences. We are seeking the ideal coaching staff to help select, prepare, and lead the U.S. teams for the 2024 event. 

As such, the selection process for coaching positions in the USA Ultimate national team program is highly competitive and highly selective. As an applicant please understand that not getting an interview or being selected in no ways diminishes your accomplishments as a coach. USA Ultimate's goal is to select from the best coaches, the coaches that best fit the position that is open.

Qualifications to be an assistant coach of the Men's, Women's, or Mixed National Team:
- Must have an active coach level USA Ultimate membership.
- Must be USAU Club certified or be willing to become certified before tryouts.
- Must agree to the USA Ultimate National Team Coach Code of Conduct.

In order to be considered, all applicants must be able to attend the following:
- Must be able to attend two tryout camps to be held in the first quarter of 2024 (exact dates & location TBD)
- Must be able to attend a training weekends (exact dates & location TBD)
- Must be able to attend a week of training camp prior to WFDF's WUC (exact dates & location TBD)
- Must be able to attend WFDF's 2024 WUC (August 31 - September 7, 2024, Gold Coast, Australia)
Inability to commit to this timeline can result in disqualification from candidacy for any 2024 WUC coaching position.

Assistant Coaches will be selected by the USA Ultimate Coaching Committee, USA Ultimate staff, the 2024 WUC Head Coaches (Nancy Sun (women's), John Groess (mixed) and Ben Van Heuvelen (men's)), and the 2025 WG Head Coach (Matty Tsang).

All WUC coaches will have a demonstrated commitment to strong character and sportsmanship and will be chosen based on the following criteria:
- Ultimate coaching experience
- Ability and willingness to work with USA Ultimate administration
- Ability to work with elite club players
- Experience with international competition
- Passion for engaging and supporting people of diverse identities.
- Experience engaging individuals of diverse backgrounds and identities in sports or other activities  
- Must have demonstrated excellence in achievement (in terms of results, outcomes, consistency) in their coaching roles
- Must have demonstrated excellence as a coach in terms of strategy, building a positive team culture, and team building
- Must have demonstrated that they are capable of coordinating and managing different people and organizations, all the while, dealing with the stress and pressure that comes with competition and expectations.
- Must have demonstrated the ability to work within the team concept when it is defined by someone else.
