ADA member input on Draft Queensland Deer Management Strategy

The Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) has commenced stakeholder consultation on its 'Draft Feral (sic) Deer Management Strategy 2022-27'. The Australian Deer Association (ADA) is preparing a submission. This survey is to gain feedback and ideas from Queensland based ADA members.

Question Title

* 1. The Vision of the draft strategy is:
"Feral (sic) deer are effectively managed to prevent introductions, reduce impacts and limit the distribution of feral (sic) deer in Queensland"

The ADA believes that the vision should also include an acknowledgement of the benefits and value of wild deer.
An alternative vision that the ADA might propose could be:
"Wild deer are effectively managed to prevent introductions, reduce impacts, limit distribution and maximise social, ecological and environmental benefits"

How would you rate...

Very poor Poor Neutral Good Very good
The Draft (DAF) vision
The proposed (ADA) vision

Question Title

* 2. The Goals of the draft strategy are:
1. Feral (sic) deer are strategically managed using best practice feral (sic) deer management informed by research.
2. Feral (sic) deer management is made more effective through partnerships, planning, and collaboration.
3. Awareness and understanding of feral (sic) deer impacts and the capability of all land managers to control feral deer is increased.

The ADA believes that a strategy should set positive, realistic and workable goals.
Alternative goals that the ADA might propose could be:
1. Wild deer are strategically managed using best practice wild deer management informed by research.
2. Wild deer management is made more effective through partnerships with all relevant stakeholders, planning, and collaboration.
3. Awareness and understanding of the range of impacts of wild deer (positive and negative) and the capability of all land managers to manage wild deer is increased.
