Overview

The Sport for Good NYC Leadership Council was formed in November of 2017 as part of Laureus’ larger Sport for Good cities strategy. This unique relationship between Laureus and local leaders helps to balance the power of an international foundation with the nuance of navigating local relationships and culture.

The Sport for Good NYC Leadership Council works in partnership with Laureus’ staff to execute the vision and strategy in two broad areas:

  • Membership - Laureus provides ongoing professional development, networking, and resources for individuals and organizations in the field of sport for development through membership in Sport for Good NYC. Organizations and individuals can sign up for free and receive access to capacity building events throughout the year that range from functional training, to certification, to networking and community building. All organizations complete an Annual Membership Profile to better help evidence the impact and growth of the sector. The Leadership Council plays a critical role in planning events to ensure that they meet the needs of the sector.
  • Coalition Building for Collective Action & Advocacy - Laureus provides backbone support services and support for local stakeholders to strategize and take collective action to advance the field of sport for development. During the first few years in NYC, much of our work related to Collective Impact has been focused on building trust and relationship between local stakeholders, learning to work together functionally and intentionally, and raising financial resources that can propel collective action.

Guiding Values and Principles of Working

The Leadership Council and Laureus USA are driven by a strong set of values and guiding principles. Prospective Leadership Council members should be prepared to commit to the following guiding principles of work:
  • Establishing a culture of learning and improvement
  • Being authentic in our communication so we can talk about things on which we don’t agree, we are uncomfortable about, or that we feel do not support our efforts to work together
  • Working together to sustain our efforts through actively advocating for and recruiting members
  • Gathering feedback from the membership base to inform our decisions
  • Developing an inclusive decision making process
  • A multi-stakeholder and cross-sector approach to collaboration and problem solving
  • Engaging a broad and diverse group of stakeholders to build the strongest coalition possible, including leaders in government, civic, business, philanthropic, and non-profit organizations
  • An annual review process where we revise goals and action plans for the coming year
  • An authentic approach to making the council and our work more diverse, equitable, and inclusive of the Sport for Good NYC community. Please see here for our equity statement.
  • Having fun and building community alongside our work

Expectations and Responsibilities of Council
