The tennis courts at Sandy Lane are reaching the end of their life-expectancy. Taverham Parish Council has actioned regular repairs alongside the cleaning schedule but the need to resurface the courts becomes greater every year.

The Parish Council had intended to simply overlay the existing courts’ surfaces but a structural inspection has revealed that a full reconstruction is necessary. This has created an opportunity for the Council to provide an exciting new tennis facility accessible to all.

Our vision is to completely rebuild the courts to benefit as many people as possible. The courts will be wheelchair accessible, painted to assist the visually impaired, and it will be easier to book a court if you are a casual tennis player. We know that our pay and play facility isn’t suitable for modern life. We intend on implementing a smart gate system. Players can book and pay for a court online and they will be issued with a one-time access code to gain entry to the courts. If you wish to play in the evening as it starts to get dark, a brand new timed lighting system will be available.

This ambitious project will be funded using money from local development specifically designated for sporting provision. The Parish Council will need to apply to use these funds and these are only accessible for a limited period of time. We expect that the available funds will fall short of the overall project costs and we plan to plug the gap by applying for grant funding.

If the Council does not take action the courts will become derelict and the community will lose a valuable amenity. This consultation will give our residents the opportunity to help us create a long-lasting sporting facility providing health and social benefits for all to enjoy.
