ERVA Open Call for Visioning Themes 2024 |
Background for open call
Funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Directorate for Engineering, the Engineering Research Visioning Alliance (ERVA) is a neutral convener that helps to identify bold and transformative new engineering research directions. We do this by engaging experts in a visioning event.
Our call to action for you is to share Big Ideas--research problems for ERVA visioning. We greatly appreciate your insight on ideas that can shape exciting future engineering research with impacts that affect our entire ecosystem. Please help ERVA identify bold new engineering research challenges that are:
Our call to action for you is to share Big Ideas--research problems for ERVA visioning. We greatly appreciate your insight on ideas that can shape exciting future engineering research with impacts that affect our entire ecosystem. Please help ERVA identify bold new engineering research challenges that are:
- Ripe for engineering research intervention;
- Emerging, nascent, and currently under-resourced with respect to engineering;
- Capable of major societal impact (if resourced);
- Broad enough to engage the multidisciplinary engineering research community; and
- Distinct from the previous visioning themes:
- The Role of Engineering to Address Climate Change
- Leveraging Biology to Power Engineering Impact,
- Engineering R&D Solutions for Unhackable Infrastructure,
- Sustainable Transportation Networks,
- Engineered Systems for Water Security,
- Engineering the Future of Distributed Manufacturing,
- Engineering Materials for a Sustainable Future,
- Strategic Thinking for Engineering Research in the Era of AI,
- Engineering Solutions to Combat Antimicrobial Resistance,
- Quantum Enabled Technologies,
- Transforming Women's Health Outcomes through Engineering, and
- Strategic Engineering Focus for Next-Generation Wireless Competitiveness.
Please use the prompts below to describe a societal problem and answer as many questions as you can. Please be as concise as possible and avoid jargon. The information you provide will be reviewed by ERVA leadership (Executive Committee, Standing Council, and Advisory Board) and staff, and if your idea is chosen, you will be contacted by ERVA.
