APRA AMCOS is delighted to present 321 Sessions, a fun and informal opportunity for Darwin-based songwriters/composers to try their hand at co-writing with fellow writers.
 
Held on Saturday April 22 at Billawook Gurinyi Community Centre, the 321 Sessions provides a no-pressure environment for creators to collaborate outside their comfort zones.
 
Come along, write new music and make new friends! Deadline for application is COB Wednesday 5th April 2023.
 
This session we welcome artist and songwriter Kuya James to curate the sessions. Multi-faceted and iconically recognised artist and music producer Kuya James (aka James Mangohig), Darwin born,  “Kuya” in the Filipino tongue means “older brother”. A term of endearment and respect that he would gain not only from his biological family, but from the families he has made within communities spanning music, dance, culture and theatre.
 
Starting out as a bass player in church, he went on to play 100’s of gigs with bands of all genres, leading him to joining the Hip Hop collective "Culture Connect". In 2004, he formed Sietta with vocalist and songwriter Caiti Baker. Together they signed a record deal and publishing agreement and released 2 albums and 2 EPs to widespread critical acclaim.  
Nominated for an ARIA as Producer Of The Year for his work on “Preach” by Daniel Johns. His debut album “ISA” was released in September 2020, and second ARIA nomination for Best World Music Album. 
 
A 2018 recipient of a Sidney Myer Fellowship, Kuya James is a much sought after music producer, bass player and DJ.Kuya James currently operates out of the Billawook Gurinyi Community Centre and Boat Ramp Studios
 
Successful 321 applicants will be personally matched with two other APRA AMCOS members artists to write in a space within the studio for two hours to try and create a new work! We'll kick off the session meeting with Kuya James who will provide some hints and tips to get you started.
 
We are looking for artists who have:
* Demonstrated capacity to write works; 
* Interest in developing co-writing skills; 
* Are open to working with others;
* Are available 11am - 4pm Saturday 22nd April 2023.
 
Please note that by applying for this opportunity you understand that the selection committee's decision will be final and that percentage splits for works created in this process will be shared equally by the participants unless agreed in writing prior to the sessions.
