Expanding the Network - Program Requirements and Guidelines

NASA’s Universe of Learning provides a unique opportunity to harness the power of NASA’s astrophysics discoveries, data, scientists, and STEM engagement resources to enrich learning experiences and engage diverse communities in exploring the universe. NASA's Universe of Learning is part of the NASA Science Activation program, from the Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters. The Science Activation program connects diverse learners of all ages with science in a way that activates minds and promotes deeper understanding of our world and beyond. By leveraging these resources, NASA’s Universe of Learning aims to create an exciting integration of science content, educational practices and collaborative learning opportunities.

The Informal Learning Network (ILN) is a dynamic partnership of museums, science centers, and other informal education institutions united in their mission to foster scientific curiosity and discovery. Through access with NASA’s Astrophysics discoveries and connections with subject matter experts in the field, the ILN makes astrophysics accessible and inspiring to communities
traditionally underserved in STEM fields. The Informal Learning Network is now offering a round of competitive funding to informal learning institutions.

Project Goal: To Foster co-creation and inclusivity, reducing barriers to participation and expanding access to scientific knowledge about the universe.

Successful Applications will:
  • Implement projects that utilize NASA’s Universe of Learning resources creatively.
  • Focus on inclusivity, aiming to reduce barriers to STEM learning experiences.
  • Foster meaningful collaborations that enhance participant engagement and learning.
Required Elements:
  • Demonstrated understanding of NASA’s Universe of Learning resources.
  • Clear plan for engaging diverse and underrepresented audiences.
  • Strong partnerships with local or regional organizations.
  • Detailed description of project goals and community impact.
  • Active membership of either Smithsonian Affiliations or the Association of Science and Technology Centers.
Preferred Characteristics:
  • Innovative use of NASA’s Universe of Learning resources.
  • Co-creation with audiences or community partners.
  • Plans for sustainability of partnerships and programming for long-term impact.
Selection Criteria
  • Alignment with NASA’s Universe of Learning educational objectives.
  • Potential for broad community impact and engagement.
  • Cost-effectiveness and practicality of the budget.
  • Organizational capacity to execute the proposed project.

*The NASA’s Universe of Learning program reserves the right to make partial selections based on budgetary and other considerations. The number of awards will be subject to the number of proposal submissions and availability of funds.
Available Funding Tiers:
This RFP offers two funding tiers, Launchpad and Voyager, to address the specific needs of both new and returning participants. This reflects our commitment to fostering both the initiation and deepening of astrophysics-themed learning collaborations.

Launchpad Tier (Tier 1):

Purpose: Introduce new participants to NASA’s Universe of Learning, focusing on initial integration and community engagement.
Funding Level: $2,500 - $5,000
Eligibility: All ASTC member organizations or Smithsonian Affiliates
Expectations:
  • Utilize NASA’s Universe of Learning resources to create introductory STEM programs.
  • Engage local communities, especially those underserved in STEM.
  • Participate in the ILN’s virtual monthly "Cosmic Conversations."
Voyager Tier (Tier 2):

Purpose: Deepen and expand existing partnerships, emphasizing co-creation and community-wide impacts.
Funding Level: $5,000 - $10,000
Eligibility: Returning members with prior NASA’s Universe of Learning funding.
Expectations:
  • Enhance and scale up previous projects using NASA’s UoL resources.
  • Demonstrate significant community and partner engagement and co-creation.
  • Showcase successful implementations and collaborations.
  • Participate in the ILN’s virtual monthly"Cosmic Conversations."
