NHS England has published the National PEWS chart on 3rd November 2023 in collaboration with the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health and the Royal College of Nursing.  We have been advised that it is not yet mandatory and that Trusts’ implementation of National PEWS will be supported by appointing an education/implementation lead over 2023-2024.

The digital National PEWS specification is planned for release later this year in 2023. System C were given the opportunity to review the digital National PEWS beta specification in May 2023 along with other suppliers to feedback on any issues or concerns we had, which we did. As you know, the CareFlow Vitals solution is in the process of being updated to a new web platform (Vitals V5), the release timelines of the National PEWS specification has meant that we will implement National PEWS as part of the CareFlow Vitals update to the web platform, planned for release December 2024. We are already building the core components that the digital National PEWS will be based on and once we have a finalised digital National PEWS specification we will be able to confirm and define the additional features required.

We understand our customers will be keen to have the new National PEWS as soon as possible and would be grateful if you could answer the following questions to help us understand your position on it’s implementation.

Some of you are in the process of upgrading Vitals V4 and would like to have new PEWS models or update existing PEWS models, we are performing a gap analysis on the National PEWS paper chart, to see how closely we could be aligned with existing Vitals V4 capability, would this be an acceptable interim solution, with no additional customisation until we compete the work in Vitals V5?
