Setting Priorities for the 2020-2022 Accessibility Plan

St.Amant's Commitment to Accessibility

The Accessibility Planning Committee is working on St.Amant's Accessibility Plan for 2020-2022. We need your help to set the accessibility priorities for St.Amant. The goal is to improve accessibility by removing barriers for people.

What are the most important accessibility improvements for St.Amant? Please choose your top five from the list below (in any order). Or add your own ideas.

With your feedback, we will identify the top 10 barriers to focus on over the next two years. The committee will use the following criteria when setting priorities: the impact of removing the barrier, cost, and risk/safety implications.

Add adaptive lighting in common areas/whole building

Repair non-smooth floors, surfaces, and unlevelled entrances

Redesign reception desk to be more accessible

Provide height-adjustable workstations

Consider the direction doors swing open for storage

Swap in automatic doors at 440 River Road

Install new sound systems

Make Autism Programs' fourth floor offices fully accessible

Add soap pumps at an accessible height for child care centre children

Proactively install/renovate community homes to allow aging in place

Make Secondary Building fully accessible – emergency exits, doorways, offices, washroom

Increase space in ramp to cafeteria

Improve accessibility for Spirit Cottage pool house - make it easier to move stretchers in and out

Provide a shorter, safer path to Spirit Cottage fire pit

Fix potholes in the parking lot

Provide training in the manner of employee's choice

Add Braille signage in public areas

Improve adaptive communications

Revise written documents - remove complex language, increase font, and fix other barriers

Build an accessible website to current standards

Shorten fire alarm notices to keep people focused

Include visual cues for emergency alarms/codes

Make homes fully accessible for residents and visitors

Ensure reliable translation services are available

Improve accessible transportation choices – more wheelchair vans, more space inside vans taxi chits for friends/staff

Improve community accessibility - advocacy

Improve accessibility in rooms/doorways

Provide meaningful translation for families accessing training and services where English is not their first language

Accommodate families with alternative locations for training or services

Increase awareness of mental health resources – EAP/CISM/Mental Health First Aid

Make elevators more accessible

Provide more smart products/equipment/appliances for homes/rooms

Have resources to meet the accessibility needs of visitors on short notice. For example, sign language interpreting or large font documents.
