SR 409 Julia Butler Hansen Bridge construction survey |
We want to hear from you!
In the summers of 2017 and 2018, contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation will paint the steel structure and replace the timber deck of the SR 409 Julia Butler Hansen Bridge.
Originally built in 1938, the aging bridge is in need of repair. The paint on the historical structure is flaking and peeling away, exposing the steel to the elements, which results in rust and corrosion. The timber deck under the asphalt is damaged and needs to be replaced. Crews will remove the timber structure that supports the asphalt surface, replace it and re-pave the bridge.
By doing this work now, we will preserve the bridge's structural integrity, maintaining this important transportation connection, and prolonging the useful life of the bridge.
