Spotlight: Mapping for Human Rights on the Borderlands
About NNIRR: The National Network for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (NNIRR) works to defend and expand the rights of all immigrants and refugees, regardless of immigration status. NNIRR has been an active leader in the immigrant rights movement for over 30 years, supporting grassroots organizing, advocacy, education, and capacity building in local communities across the country and particularly on the border. NNIRR affirms the right of mobility, that migrants’ rights are human rights, and that no international border can be a zone of exception when it comes to human rights protections. Through our office in El Paso, Texas, we are expanding our human rights Praxis on the US-Mexico border by working with grassroots leaders and organizations to build collective platforms for capacity-building, knowledge-exchange, and political action.
Our Values: This is a community-based, participatory mapping and documentation project, grounded in human rights, intersectionality, and popular education. Our goal is to build solidarity and collective responses to the crises of poverty, social inequality, militarization, and immigration enforcement on the borderlands.
To that end, NNIRR is committed to the following methodology:
Centering community voices, particularly those directly impacted.
Establishing horizontal dialogue and information exchange
Building solidarity and social inclusion
Creating platforms for shared analysis and collective action
Protecting the confidentiality of contributing voices who wish to remain anonymous
