Parent Survey for Sparta CUSD 140 Proposal for Late Start Days for Staff Collaborative Planning Time |
Sparta Collaborative Staff Time
The Sparta Community Unit School District 140 is proposing to the Board of Education the addition of one 45 minute late start day each week in the 2017-18 school year. Late start days would be one way to give more time for teachers to work together to improve instruction. By providing additional time for collaboration to review assessment data, interventions, and extensions, our entire team of educators can provide a more tailored educational experience designed to meet students’ individual needs. Late start days would also allow for more opportunities for teachers to share best practices that can be embedded system-wide throughout the District. The need for collaboration time is especially relevant with the district wide newly implemented math curriculum and the implementation of a new English Language Arts curriculum the following year.
Sparta currently uses a monthly half day release time schedule for professional development. With the adoption of a late start day, all but two of those half day releases would be eliminated from the school schedule.
We encourage all parents to review the Frequently Asked Questions document on this subject, available at this link on the district website, Late Start FAQ. The FAQ page is also available following the survey. Survey responses are anonymous; no identifying information is requested from respondents. The survey will close on Sunday, May 7th.
