Thank you for your interest in the American Academy of Pediatrics Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) Substance Use ECHO!

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Substance Use ECHO serves as a forum for pediatric practices to develop and implement quality improvement processes for addressing substance use concerns in adolescents. This program connects primary care providers with a team of multidisciplinary experts on how to implement substance use prevention, detection, assessment, and intervention practices utilizing the Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) approach. Participants will meet monthly for seven sessions for a brief lecture followed by a de-identified patient case presentation and discussion.

The application deadline is May 25, 2021.

All sessions meet from 12:00-1:00 pm Eastern on the 3rd Tuesday of the month, June 2021 through November 2021 and the 2nd Tuesday of the month December 2021.

There will be a kickoff call Tuesday, June 1 from 12pm - 1pm ET to go over program details.

ECHO sessions occur virtually using Zoom video conference technology.  

Eligibility criteria: 

  • Provide primary care to pediatric and young adult patients.
  • Identify a core project team that will provide leadership and oversight within the practice for the project. The team may include, at a minimum, a primary care physician who will serve as physician lead; a nurse; and/or an additional team member such as front office staff, practice manager, or care coordinator (this role will be responsible for data submission for the project). Practices may choose to include additional members on the core project team, and all practice staff can participate in educational offerings.
  • If required by their institution, seek Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval for participation. (Please note: The AAP IRB has reviewed and determined this project to be QI, issuing an exempt determination as it does with all QI projects. AAP IRB review is typically sufficient for most participating practices).
  • Agree to the participation requirements:
    • Participate in the project for its duration of 7 months
    • Participate in all 7 ECHO sessions
    • Complete individual pre-post project evaluation surveys
    • Each practice is required to complete retrospective, de-identified chart review for a total of 7 cycles through AAP Quality Improvement Data Aggregator (QIDA)
    • Hold at least 7 team meetings to review data and plan and implement PDSA (Plan, Do, Study, Act) process improvement cycles
