Undergraduate Coping Mechanisms for Depression |
CONSENT TO PARTICIPATE IN A RESEARCH STUDY
You have been asked to participate in a research study entitled “Non-Traditional Coping Mechanisms of Undergraduate Students for Symptoms of Depression” conducted by Gilles Stromberg, a Graduate Student in the Department of Education at the University of San Francisco in San Francisco, CA. The faculty supervisor for this study is Dr. Genevieve Negron-Gonzales, a professor in the Department of Education at the University of San Francisco in San Francisco, CA
WHAT THE STUDY IS ABOUT:
The purpose of this research study is to Identify & Measure prevalence and perceived efficacy of non-traditional coping mechanisms of undergraduate students navigating symptoms of depression. Non-Traditional Coping mechanisms is being defined as behaviors, habits, or techniques not prescribed or administered by a licensed Therapist, Counselor, Psychiatrist, or Psychologist.
WHAT WE WILL ASK YOU TO DO:
During this study, you will be asked about your demographic information, your prevalence of depression symptoms, your utilized coping mechanisms, and your perception of efficacy concerning those coping mechanisms (Do they work? Do they work well?)
DURATION AND LOCATION OF THE STUDY:
Your participation in this study will involve __minutes of answering multiple choice, likert scale, and short response questions. The study will take place online, and via Google Hangout if you are interested in the Qualitative Interview portion.
POTENTIAL RISKS AND DISCOMFORTS:
The research procedures described above may involve the following risks and/or discomforts:
+ Remembering or recalling moments where you navigated depression may alter your mood or provide opportunities for symptoms to flare up.
+ Talking about Suicidal Ideation may provide an opportunity to return to suicidal thoughts.
If you wish, you may choose to withdraw your consent and discontinue your participation at any time during the study without penalty.
BENEFITS:
You will receive no direct benefit from your participation in this study.

Any data you provide in this study will be kept confidential unless disclosure is required by law. In any report we publish, we will not include information that will make it possible to identify you or any individual participant. Specifically, we will use University of San Francisco digital resources, archives, and accounts to ensure the security of your information.
COMPENSATION/PAYMENT FOR PARTICIPATION:
There is no payment or other form of compensation for your participation in this study.
VOLUNTARY NATURE OF THE STUDY:
Your participation is voluntary and you may refuse to participate without penalty or loss of benefits. Furthermore, you may skip any questions or tasks that make you uncomfortable and may discontinue your participation at any time without penalty. In addition, the researcher has the right to withdraw you from participation in the study at any time.
