Refugee Work
1.
I am interested in being involved in resettling refugee families or displaced persons in the following way(s):
Housing – locating housing and securing housing.
Decorating - making the housing a home once it is secured by obtaining furniture and decorating.
Benefits – help individuals obtain social security cards and government benefits. Assist with related follow up demands and meetings, including technology needed to fill out and submit forms to the appropriate agencies.
This may include accompanying the person(s) to meetings at the Department of Social Services and Social Security Office, and/or attending zoom meetings.
Transportation – Teach the family members how to use public transportation. Also provide rides, occasionally or on a more regular basis, or arrange for rides when necessary.
Community – help the family learn more about community building opportunities, including connecting with other refugees with similar backgrounds and helping the families to find places of worship, if appropriate.
Education – Help the family navigate the education system and school enrollment. Supplement what the kids or teachers are learning in the classroom by visiting the family at home or by zoom to provide supplemental educational assistance.
Teaching English – Assist with English as a second language programs. Do you speak another language, have contacts with translator agencies or have experience teaching English as a second language?
Employment – Assist adult family members in securing employment, including, but not limited to, job search, interview prep, and clothing.
Childcare – In the event that the family has younger children, provide short term childcare assistance if the parents are unable to secure help for one time appointments.
