MENTAL HEALTH, EQUITY, RESTORATIVE JUSTICE (MERJ) COHORTS
|
OVERVIEW
Schools and educators are tasked with myriad initiatives to support students, staff, and their communities. Often, the implementation of these initiatives is siloed, can create initiative fatigue for educators and administrators, and efforts can conflict with one another. In order to amplify the values and goals of Youth Mental Health First and teen Mental Health First Aid, mental health training must coincide with cultivating equitable learning environments and integrating restorative justice practices. Focusing efforts on this intersection is necessary to meaningfully shift school culture to amplify the mental well-being of the school community.
Regardless of a school's entry point into Youth Mental Health First Aid, teen Mental Health First Aid, Restorative Justice principles, and equity, we can support a school in identifying the connections, amplifying their efforts, and developing a plan for creating sustainable school-wide change.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Schools interested in integrating mental health, restorative justice, and equity efforts at their school are invited to complete this form. You will receive an email invitation to schedule a virtual meeting to share more about your school, gain an understanding about implementation requirements, and learn more about the learning environment and opportunities.
Prior to starting, each school will be asked to commit to the following:
- Identifying 4-6 staff members to serve as part of their implementation team. These staff members will be available to attend a 3-day training.
- Identify 6-10 students to serve as student representatives for the implementation team. These students will be available to attend a 2-day training.
- Identify weekly times for student representatives to meet. These weekly meetings will serve as opportunities to continue the momentum and center student voice in mental health, restorative justice, and equity at the school.
Each school will be assigned to a MERJ (Mental Health x Equity, x Restorative Justice) Cohort to learn alongside other North Carolina schools to develop alignment in mental health programming, restorative justice practices, and equity principles.
Within these cohorts, each school will be offered the following learning opportunities:
- 3-day in-person training for their schools' implementation team
- 2-day in-person training for selected student leaders from their school
- 1- day virtual training for all staff.
- Monthly webinars with other schools within the cohort.
