About the Design, by the artist Donald Lipski:
Over the years, I’ve made a number of sculptures that appeared to be trees that have grown into shapes that stretch the limits of nature. These have been largely shown in galleries and museums. I haven’t made any public works along these lines, though my chandeliers—such as the one below at Grand Central Terminal—have used the same techniques.

Among my all-time favorites is a simple ring, shown below both in a gallery and at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. Since it could not possibly grow this way, there is something quite magical and elegant about it.
Past Work Example:
For Phoenix, I have imagined this blown up to heroic proportions. To illustrate this, I have simply enlarged the image of the actual small sculpture. In reality, it would be redesigned with more appropriately scaled bark. It may have knots and other points of interest but would be quite simple. I picture it around 2 feet thick and around 20’ tall. It would be made of concrete.

While it would primarily stand as a sculpture, there are so many ways it can be interacted with. I can picture re kids running up to it and trying to jump over; somersaulting over it; balancing on it, as above; trying to shimmy up it a ways; simply sitting on it. One safe advantage is that it would be virtually impossible to get very far up it, let alone to the top. Yet it poses myriad challenges for the more daring kids. I’ve shown some of these in my previous illustrations.
Past Work Example:
1.Does the artwork design serve as a primary focal point for the park?
2.Do you feel the artwork design is engaging for park visitors?
3.What elements of the design concept do you like, or not like? How could the design be improved?
