NATCO, The Organization for Transplant Professionals is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Editor-in-Chief, Progress in Transplantation (PIT)

Progress in Transplantation is the official journal of NATCO. Transplantation is a highly specialized area of medicine in which state-of-the-art technology, research and innovative techniques combine with the perseverance of health care professionals to create an improved quality of life for individuals with serious and complex medical problems. Progress in Transplantation reflects the multi-disciplinary team approach to procurement and clinical aspects of organ and tissue transplantation by providing a professional forum for exchange of the continually changing body of knowledge in transplantation through the publication of original research, case studies, donor management issues, international papers, review articles, clinical practice issues, and policy papers of interest to the various professional disciplines focused on transplantation. The journal is a quarterly, indexed, peer-reviewed publication.
Overview of Role of the Editor-in-Chief

1. The Editor has a clear vision of appropriate journal content based on the journal’s purpose and mission, the needs and interests of readers, the most promising areas of research in the field, and the extent to which the journal should try to attract and publish this research.

2. Framing journal editorial policy jointly with Sage Publications and the NATCO Executive Director, working with the Editorial team on development plans, indexing strategy, etc.

3. Ensuring an adequate flow of material to meet the publication schedules

4. Working with the Editorial team/Editorial Board to commission submissions and plan Special Issues

5. Assisting in the appointment of other members of the editorial team for the journal

6. Promote the journal by distributing business cards/flyers/other promotional material at conferences

7. Dealing with all author appeals and inquiries regarding decisions

8. Making final decisions on the acceptance or rejection of articles submitted to the journal. In all cases the Editor-in-Chief’s decision on a paper will be final.

9. Overall time commitment requires approximately 10-15 hours per week of work.
Education and Experience Requirements:

· Master’s Degree required, Doctoral degree strongly preferred.

· Publication in peer reviewed journals is required for this position. Preference will be given for individuals who have published in PIT.

· Experience as an editorial board member or reviewer of a peer reviewed journal is required.

· Must be experienced in transplantation.

· Demonstrated leadership and strategic planning abilities.

· Proficiency in digital publication tools. Experience with Scholar One is a plus.
Scope of Responsibilities:

1. Manages the editorial direction of the publication consistent with the mission and goals of NATCO

2. Maintains regular communication with the editorial board, authors, publishers, and association Board of Directors

3. Identifies candidates for editorial board positions based upon stated qualifications

4. Creates an orientation process for newly appointed editorial board members

5. Reviews the performance of editorial board members annually and updates editorial board accordingly

6. Establishes date and agenda for editorial board meetings

7. Develops ongoing plans and procedures for manuscript solicitation for special issues based on a topic of interest to the readers.

8. Develops guidelines for manuscript evaluation, peer review, and Special Issues

9. Reviews each manuscript submitted to determine appropriateness for Progress in Transplantation readers.

10. Sends manuscripts to peer reviewers who have an expertise in a specified area of donation, procurement or clinical transplantation

11. Selects manuscripts for publication following the peer review process

12. Selects one article per issue and creates the test questions that allow readers to receive CE credit upon passing the test

13. Cultivates and maintains pool of peer reviewers.

14. Submits text materials and appropriate illustrations, in acceptable format, to the publication staff according to an established schedule

15. Collaborates with the publication staff regarding publication format, cover design, and number of pages per issue based on budget allotted.

16. Coordinates with the publication staff to establish production schedules for publication and special features

17. Collaborates with the publication staff to establish procedures for production processes

18. Reviews the journal galleys (also known as production article or issue proofs)

19. Evaluates production processes and recommends changes to the appropriate group or individual

20. Reviews new advertisements for approval or disapproval

21. Writes a letter from the editor for each published issue of the Journal.

22. Manuscript Submission Responsibilities include:

a. Forwarding manuscripts to reviewers

b. Sending reminders for overdue reviews

c. Processing incoming reviews

d. Forwarding manuscript dispositions and reviewer comments to authors

e. Troubleshooting problems with electronic submissions and forwarding of materials to authors, reviewers, production staff

f. Securing permissions

g. Checking references prior to sending final revisions to the publisher
