The City of Oak Ridge is updating its Comprehensive Plan. The plan, which serves as the City’s roadmap for the next 20 years, will help City Council, Planning Commission, and City Staff make important land use, budgeting, and development decisions. It aims to help the City maintain its character, enhance the quality of life for residents, and support economic development.

This Comprehensive Plan update will include specific implementation steps and expand on the existing City Blueprint to help guide decisions regarding future land use, neighborhood planning, transportation, infrastructure – and more!

However, one of the most important pieces of the process is you. Please give us your thoughts. As residents, students, employees, and visitors to Oak Ridge, you have important perspective and insight. Your feedback is critical and will help guide the development of the Comprehensive Plan.

Before beginning the Comprehensive Plan work, the Oak Ridge Municipal Planning Commission reviewed and confirmed that the primary ‘vision’ of the City Blueprint (developed from 2017-2019) is still valid and should be considered a jumping-off point for the Comprehensive Plan. More than 1,800 ideas were collected from almost 1,000 people who attended public meetings and events in development of the City Blueprint. (see link to Blueprint on the homepage).

The clear message coming out of the Blueprint was a shared vision to Grow Oak Ridge primarily within or immediately adjacent to existing City services areas. This is intended to encourage efficient service delivery and walkability in close proximity to existing development.

Residents emphasized a desire to be “Uniquely Oak Ridge.” This uniqueness is built on the identified ‘values’ of the Blueprint, which included:
  • The importance of our foundation of science and technology
  • Our commitment to public education
  • The importance of our natural assets like greenbelts, waterways, and trails
