Welcome to New Opportunities Mentoring Program

Thank you for your interest in the community-based mentoring program that is offered through New Opportunities, Inc. We have programs in Audubon, Carroll, Greene, Guthrie, and Sac Counties.
What is Mentoring?
"Mentoring is a trusting relationship that brings a young person (a mentee) together with a caring adult (a mentor) who offers guidance, support and encouragement aimed at developing the competence and character of the 'mentee.' Within a mentoring relationship, mentors and ‘mentees’ typically spend time getting to know each other, having fun together, building trust, and working toward self-identified goals” (DuBois and Karcher, 2005).
A mentor in our community-based program is matched with a youth/mentee within your own community. Youth in our program range from the age of 5 to 17 and come for various backgrounds. We make intentional matches between our program mentors and mentees. You are matched with a mentee based on similar interest and preferences stated on your applications. You will be able to do activities that interest both you and your mentee at a location of your and the mentee family’s choosing. You may mentor as an individual or as couple. As a mentor, you help guide a child in a positive way. You become someone that your mentee really looks up to and learns to trust.
The requirements for our mentors in our community-based program are that you:
  • Meet with mentee for a minimum of 4 hours a month (via in-person or virtually)
  • Make a 1-year minimum commitment to your potential match/mentee
  • Pass and complete a background check for you and any other adults you may live with
  • Complete a 2-hour interview and training session-in the home of the applicant
  • Provide or complete the Mandatory Reporter training certificate(s) – child abuse
  • Present a valid Driver's license and Auto Insurance
*Note: Further application and screening paperwork will need to be filled out by the applicant at the time of the in-home interview process such as: background check (of the mentor and any adult within the household), consent to release confidential information, our mentor match agreement, and our social media policy. Upon our consent release, you will agree to complete these documents.
We are required to have all applicants complete the following application information and conduct an in-home interview/training. Upon receiving the information from this application, one of our program coordinators will be contact with you to set up a time to conduct an in-home, two hour, interview/training and complete additional paperwork. This will allow us to speak with you and get to know you better, as well as a chance to answer any questions you may have about the program. During this interview, we will also discuss our program requirements, procedures, and acquire additional information we will need from you.
For assistance, questions, and any other concerns please contact our mentoring program coordinator.
