AOE Accredited Provider Survey Regarding the New ACCME Standards

1.The ACCME replaced the term “continuing medical education” with “accredited continuing education.”  What is your level of agreement that the term “accredited continuing education” helps demonstrate integrity and the independence of this education from industry bias and marketing?
2.The ACCME introduces new terms “eligible organizations” (those eligible for accreditation) from “ineligible companies” (those not eligible for accreditation) in order to separate organizations focused on patient needs from those organizations whose primary interest is commercial. Accredited providers may no longer share learner names or contact information with “ineligible companies” without obtaining the “explicit consent of the individual learner.”

3.The new Standard 2 prohibits faculty from actively promoting products or services that serve their professional or financial interests during accredited CE, regardless of such products or services being associated with an ineligible entity. This includes consulting services, books, software, etc.

On a scale of 1 to 4, rate the level of impact this change will have on your accredited program:
4.The new Standard 3 requires accredited providers to identify, disclose, and “mitigate” relevant financial relationships that individuals in control of content have with “ineligible companies” for the previous 24 months. Rate your level of understanding regarding how you will demonstrate compliance with this ACCME requirement.
5.The new Standard 5 requires that some categories of non-accredited education “must not occur within 30 minutes” before or after accredited continuing education at a conference or other activity.

6.In order to address new/emerging therapies and the field of complementary and alternative medicine, the ACCME’s new Standard 1 requires Accredited Providers to ensure accredited education in these areas is “clearly identified as such within the program and individual presentations” and the education does not promote practices “not, or not yet, adequately based on current science, evidence, and clinical reasoning.”

7.The new Preamble, Eligibility definitions, and set of five ACCME Standards were developed with the stated intent to streamline the Standards and provide greater clarity to ensure the integrity and independence of accredited continuing education.
