Survey Introduction

6% of survey complete.
Hey there! Thanks for participating in our project, "National Trends in First-Year Writing." This survey is intended for instructors of first-year writing courses. If you are an administrator of a first-year writing program, please follow this link to find the appropriate survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/KVK5SX6

The purpose of this survey is simple: We hope to get a snapshot of FYW courses across regions and institution types, specifically the reading and assignments instructors give students in FYW. In short, we want this project to be a way for instructors to share the cool things they’re doing in their classrooms so we can learn from one another.

Before you begin the survey, we wanted to clarify a few points:
  • When we say “FYW,” we are referring to first-year writing or first-year composition courses that are required for all students at an institution or that must be substituted by an equivalent requirement (e.g., AP credit). This excludes courses such as many “Basic Writing” or “Advanced Composition” courses, which not all students are required to take.
  • You will be asked to upload a syllabus and schedule for your FYW course, so you might get those handy before you begin. (If you’d rather not upload materials, you will also have the option to answer questions about your curriculum.)
  • You have the option to remain anonymous in the survey. All identifying and demographic questions are optional. If you choose to self-identify, you will not be identified in any scholarship resulting from this survey.
  • You must have taught a FYW course within the past 5 years to participate.
  • If you teach at more than one institution, we ask that you fill out the survey for only one institution.
  • If you teach more than one FYW course at your institution (for example, you teach both a required Comp 1 and Comp 2 course), you will be given the opportunity to share information about the first two required courses in your FYW sequence one at a time. We are only collecting data about the first two courses in FYW sequences at this time.
We hope that answers the questions most likely to arise while you take the survey, but if there’s anything else we can clarify, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Enrique Paz, enrique.paz@siu.edu, and Cynthia Johnson, cynthiajohnson@missouristate.edu.
