NSHE Mentoring Institute: Practical Strategies for Inclusive Mentoring in Undergraduate Research

This year’s NSHE Mentoring Institute: Practical Strategies for Inclusive Mentoring in Undergraduate Research is an interactive, in-person mentor training for NSHE research faculty of all career levels, who mentor others, particularly in STEM research.  Practical Strategies is designed to provide resources, infrastructure and connectivity, to support research and workforce development in STEM. The goal of this mentor training is to accelerate the process of becoming an effective research mentor by providing mentors with an intellectual framework, an opportunity to experiment with various methods, and a forum in which to solve mentoring dilemmas with the help of their peers.
 
Hosted by NSHE Sponsored Programs Office & EPSCoR and the Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research (CIMER) Practical Strategies participants will:
  • Receive training through CIMER's Entering Mentoring curriculum.  (Valued at $1,895)
  • Develop and articulate a mentoring philosophy and plan.
  • Identify more equitable approaches for outreach to broaden student participation in undergraduate research.
  • Discuss the value of “tiered-peer mentoring” and the effectiveness of enabling students as mentors.
  • Discover strategies that foster equity and inclusion of diverse populations in research mentoring.
  • Connect with other NSHE institutions and colleagues.
