The Women in Surgery Committee is committed to ensuring committee members fully benefit from their involvement and successfully contribute to advancing the committee and its mission during their membership. Before proceeding with your application, please review the membership expectations and participation requirements of the committee.

Membership Requirements
Committee Applicants must be an active Fellow or Associate Fellow of the American College of Surgeons in good standing.

Meeting Attendance Requirements
Attend 75% of assigned subcommittee virtual meetings each year (average of 3-4 meetings/year)
Attend 50% of the full committee meetings each year (Fall and Spring hybrid meetings)

Participation Requirements
Actively participate in a minimum of two subcommittees and its activities and initiatives beyond attending meetings and meeting the deadlines set forth. Some examples of participation include:
  • Writing a clinical congress session proposal
  • Organizing a virtual mentorship professional development session
  • Assisting with researching and writing a topic for an ACS Statement of the College
  • Reviewing mentorship applications and matching mentors/mentees Developing resources and programs for personal and professional development
  • Writing a letter of nomination for a leadership position or award
  • Serve as a facilitator for a program or event
  • Supporting the creation of leadership development and succession programs
Membership Term
A member is eligible to serve one 3-year term. Upon membership evaluation, and needs of the committee, a member may receive an extension of their membership for an additional term of 3 years. This membership extension is at the review and discretion of the Committee Executive Leadership Team and the Mission and Membership Subcommittee. An additional term is not guaranteed.
